The Elite by Kiera Cass

Rating: 4/5 stars
☆★★★★

The second book of the Selection series by Kiera Cass, The Elite is about America Singer, a girl who was chosen to be in the Selection (a chance and rivalry against other selected women to become the next princess). The number of women is getting smaller and smaller, the politics are getting more intense, and the riots are getting more violent. Can America make it through the Selection?

If you haven't seen my first review for The Selection, click here. Also, since this is a continuation of the series, there's going to be spoilers in later sections.

I didn't enjoy the first book that much and found the main character very obnoxious, and nothing changed here. America is still naive and annoying and falls flat. She has so many opportunities to be smart and strong, but she ruins every chance of that. She's also a huge hypocrite. She angered me throughout this book. She doesn't really do much besides complain about boys and immediately give away every secret Maxon has for her.

Maxon grew as a character in this one, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about him. In the beginning of the book, he was a sweet, perfect little angel. With his encounters with Kriss and Celeste, I'm not so sure now. He started to annoy me, but he also started to be more independent, which made me happy.

Also, finally, the book started to feel a bit dystopian. I complained in my review of the last one that the book seemed just late in the future and not too bad, but now it's starting to get bad. The monarchy is starting to seem quite ridiculous and violent. The rebels and riots are starting to get a bit scarier (even though nothing really happens in them except everyone hiding).

The writing was still pretty good, though. I loved it even in word form. The woman reading the book sounded a bit robotic though. She also had a horrible fake Italian accent at one point which was fun to listen to. I don't know if I'm going to finish this series. I'm curious as to what will happen, but I'm not invested enough to buy the book. Maybe I'll just keep listening to the library audiobooks.

Spoiler Section!

Can I talk about how annoying America is, though? She has this weird love triangle (it's actually more of a love angle, but y'know) with Maxon and Aspen and she's obviously head over heels for Aspen but can't bear to know that Maxon would like another girl. She is upset and refuses to believe that Maxon is allowed to like other girls, despite the fact that she's going behind Maxon's back and kissing Aspen and having little dinner dates with Aspen. It's so hypocritical. And the fact that she doesn't even realize that she's being so hypocritical DRIVES ME INSANE. She's so annoying!

Also I'm not entirely sure what happened in the last couple chapters because I was listening to the audiobook and studying for a test at the same time, but I know that she was going to be kicked out but ended up staying?
